The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, against what it described as “using philanthropy as a political tool.”
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Seye Oladejo, the party said while charitable gestures are commendable, Obi’s recent donations and visits to institutions appeared “more political than humanitarian.”
“Philanthropy is about service and genuine compassion, not veiled campaigns. Nigerians can clearly see that Obi’s so-called acts of kindness are strategically targeted to keep his political relevance alive ahead of 2027,” the APC said.
The ruling party in Lagos further urged Obi to channel his resources into long-term investments that could benefit communities rather than “one-off handouts” that it claimed were designed to generate media attention.
“While we appreciate anyone who contributes to society, we must draw the line when philanthropy is reduced to photo opportunities and subtle politicking. Our people deserve sincerity, not theatrics,” Oladejo added.
The APC maintained that the former Anambra State governor should allow his track record and political ideas to speak for him, rather than, in its words, “exploiting the plight of the vulnerable for political mileage.”
Obi, known for his visits to schools, hospitals, and communities across the country, has yet to respond to the Lagos APC’s remarks. His supporters, however, argue that his philanthropic gestures predate his political career and are driven by his personal conviction to uplift the less privileged.
Political observers note that Obi’s rising popularity since the 2023 elections has continued to draw scrutiny from opponents, with many interpreting his every move through a political lens.
