The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has declared the Special Marshals as an indispensable catalyst in driving road safety awareness and drastically reducing highway crashes and fatalities across the country.
Speaking at the 2026 National Executive Council (NEC) and Stakeholders’ Advocacy Summit held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the FRSC National Headquarters Auditorium in Abuja, the Corps Marshal commended the volunteer arm for their unwavering dedication to public service and highway safety.
The event, which commenced at 10:00 AM, brought together senior management officers, regional coordinators, and delegates of the Special Marshals from across the 36 states and the FCT.
Addressing participants during his keynote address, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed emphasized that public collaboration remains central to achieving the agency’s goal of safer roads.
”The Regular Marshals cannot single-handedly patrol every kilometer of our vast road network,” Mohammed stated.
The Special Marshals represent the civic engine of our operations. As professionals, community leaders, and patriots who volunteer their time, energy, and resources without financial remuneration, you remain a key catalyst for promoting road safety, enforcing traffic discipline, and reducing avoidable fatalities on Nigerian roads.”
The FRSC Chief Executive noted that under his strategic policy thrust, the Commission is prioritizing capacity building, modern intelligence-led enforcement, and seamless coordination between regular staff and volunteer units.
Also speaking at the summit, the National Coordinator of Special Marshals, Dr. John Ogundare, expressed gratitude to the FRSC management for its continuous operational support and policy inclusion.
Ogundare reassured the Corps Marshal that the voluntary arm will intensify its grassroots advocacy campaigns, executive patrols, and traffic management interventions during peak travel periods.
In a official statement released following the conference, the Assistant Corps Marshal and Head of Policy, Research and Statistics, ACM Olusegun Ogungbemide, reiterated that the FRSC management will continue to safeguard and empower Special Marshals nationwide.
He urged all drivers and road users to respect volunteer marshals on duty, warning that assault or obstruction of any marshal on duty remains a severe criminal offense under the FRSC Establishment Act.
The summit concluded with a commitment by the FRSC leadership to expand volunteer recruitment drives nationwide to meet its strategic target for improved road monitoring and emergency response coverage.
