A former senator representing Kaduna central, Senator Sani has alleged that the motive behind those sponsoring the current nationwide protests, especially in the north, is for regime change.
Senator Sani was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Alleging that a few days to the start of the protest, money and some foreign flags were shared among the youths in the country’s northern region, Sanid said: “A day before the last protest, money was shared to the youths, and Russian flags were also shared. That shows that the whole intent of the protest is not simply about the policies and programmes of the government,” he emphasized.
“There was an attempt to create an atmosphere where there would be an overthrow of the government. When you have this kind of situation, you will see that someone is writing a script for anarchy, lawlessness, and disorder. It is incumbent for someone like us to speak.”
In the meantime, human rights activist and Senior Advocate Of Nigeria (SAN) , Femi Falana, has condemned acts of violence carried out by the protesters, adding that those waving a foreign nation’s flags as did also not mean well for the county.
“While we supported the right of the #EndBadgovernance protests, we have a patriotic duty to call on them to distance themselves from the undemocratic forces who have taken advantages of the peaceful protests to engage in violence or campaign for another coup in the country,” the Senior Advocate of Nigeria said.
“It has become necessary to point out that calling for a military coup or waving the flag of Russia, a country noted for supporting unconstitutional changes of government in Africa, does not constitute rights to protest against the government of Nigeria.
“The legitimacy protest against hardship in the land should not be turned into a campaign for a constitutional change of government.”
Falana reminded those calling for change of government through these attitudes to take cognizance of the fact that such constitutes a treasonable offence as contained in section 41 of the criminal code.
