Legal luminary Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has raised concerns over what he described as “significant inconsistencies” in the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Speaking at a news briefing at his Apapa Chambers in Lagos, Agbakoba, who is leading Akpabio’s legal team, emphasized the need for objectivity and evidence in handling such sensitive claims.
He reiterated support for efforts to combat sexual harassment but warned against compromising due process.
“We respect and support global and national efforts to create safe environments for women, especially those in public life, however, justice demands fairness, objectivity, and evidence,” he stated.
Agbakoba questioned the timeline presented by Akpoti-Uduaghan, noting that although the alleged incident occurred on December 8, 2023, the senator made complimentary social media posts about Akpabio the following day, December 9, during his birthday celebrations in Uyo.
“This juxtaposition an alleged traumatic incident followed by public eulogies presents a contradiction that must be carefully examined,” Agbakoba said.
The legal team also referenced previous allegations made by Akpoti-Uduaghan, including a 2021 accusation against a former presidential aide, which was later withdrawn, and an earlier video alleging misconduct by an unnamed minister.
While clarifying that past actions do not invalidate present claims, Agbakoba said such patterns highlight the need for consistency and corroboration.
“As the claim currently stands, it falls short of the global legal threshold for proving sexual harassment,” he said, urging the senator to provide further evidence as she had previously indicated willingness to do so.
In a letter dated April 14 and addressed to Akpoti-Uduaghan, Senate President legal team requested clarifications on the contradictions identified and gave a two-week window for response.
“This widespread coverage has damaged our client’s reputation locally and internationally. We are happy to allow you a reasonable time to clarify the contradictions referred, while our client reserves the right to all legal options,” the letter stated.
Agbakoba insisted that sexual harassment is a serious matter that requires careful and fair handling, and should be addressed through institutional channels rather than media platforms.
“Available public records reveals significant contradictions that must be considered for a fair evaluation of the situation. Proper institutional processes, not media forums, are the appropriate venue for addressing such matters,” he said.
