Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Thursday, July 10, announced that Senator Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North‑East) has replaced Senator Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan as Chair of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non‑Governmental Organisations. The removal comes amid Senator Akpoti‑Uduaghan’s ongoing suspension, though no official explanation was provided by the Senate for the change.
Senator Akpoti‑Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central and was first moved from the Local Content Committee to the Diaspora and NGOs Committee in February, has not resumed her committee duties since a Federal High Court in May ordered her reinstatement. The Senate maintains it has not received a certified true copy of that court judgment.
Senator Bassey is expected to assume the duties of the committee immediately. The leadership reshuffle reflects ongoing internal adjustments tied to Akpoti‑Uduaghan’s suspended status and unresolved legal developments.
