…Approves members for Police Service Commission (PSC)
The Senate has rejected the nomination of Mr. Nnanna Uzor Kalu as the representative of the South East in the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).
This followed the adoption of the report of the Committee on Establishment and Public Service on the confirmation of the nominations for appointment as chairman and members of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) in the plenary on Wednesday – earlier today, March 19.
Speaking on the recommendations of the Committee, the chairman, Sen. Oluwole Cyril urged the Senate to reject the nomination of Mr Kalu because of a petition against his nomination, which was laid on Tuesday and is pending at the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions.
He recommended that “the Senate approve all the nominees but those from the South East should be stepped down, pending the outcome of a petition with the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions.”
However, Chairman of the South East Development Committee, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu, opposed the recommendation, saying, “the two persons from the South East were duly nominated and qualified,” adding that he is not aware of any petition against the nominee.
In his contribution, Sen. Seriake Dickson queried the exclusion of Bayelsa State indigenes from the NASC.
“Bayelsa has never produced a member of the NASC. I will like this to be noted so that the people who are appointing can take note of this,” he said.
The recommendations of the report were approved as amended.
Mr. Saviour Enyiekere’s nomination as Chairman of NASC was approved while Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi (North West), Hon. Yusuf A. Yusuf (North West), Aminu Ibrahim Malle (North East), Alhaji Lawan Maina Mahmud (North East), Mark Hanmation Terso (North Central), Salihu Umar Agboola Balogun (North Central), Hon. Taiwo Olukemi Oluga (South West), Hon. Afeez Ipesa-Balogun (South West), Festus Ifesinachi Odii (South East), Patrick A. Giwa (South South), and Mrs. Mary Ekpeyong (South South) were approved as members.
The Senate also approved the recommendations of a report by the Committee on Police Affairs on confirmation of nominees for appointment as members of the Police Service Commission (PSC).
Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Abdulhamid, Mallam-Madori Ahmed moved the motion to consider the report in plenary. All the nominees were approved.
They are Hon. Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (Rtd), Abdulfatah Mohammed, DIG Uba B. Ringim (Rtd) and Justice Christine L. Dabup (Rtd).
