The Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, has stated that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration inherited severely dilapidated road infrastructure across the country but is currently tackling the deficit head-on.
​Senator Nwaebonyi made the remarks on Sunday during an official inspection tour of Section Three of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway. The joint oversight inspection was led by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, alongside a delegation of members from the National Assembly.
​Defending the current government’s infrastructure scorecard, Nwaebonyi emphasized that the sheer volume of broken-down networks across Nigeria required aggressive, immediate intervention, which he claims the Ministry of Works is now delivering.
​”We must be honest to admit that this administration inherited completely dilapidated roads across the length and breadth of this nation,” Nwaebonyi stated. “However, rather than trading blames, the government has confronted this challenge headlong, as evidenced by the massive construction work we are witnessing here today.”
​The lawmaker commended the Minister of Works for his hands-on approach and commitment to ensuring value for money on federal road contracts. He assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would continue to provide the necessary legislative support and budgetary approvals to guarantee the timely completion of legacy projects like the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway.
​The Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway is a multi-lane economic corridor designed to connect the northern and southern regions of Nigeria, aimed at boosting agricultural trade, security, and industrial transport upon completion.
