Security agencies have explained the reasons behind the heavy deployment of security personnel and the erection of barricades across parts of Abuja’s city centre, assuring residents that the measures are purely preventive and aimed at maintaining law and order amid increasing protests in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The agencies said there was no imminent security threat requiring public alarm, stressing that the deployments were part of routine operational strategies designed to ensure public safety, protect critical infrastructure and guarantee the smooth management of public demonstrations.
The clarification followed growing concerns among residents, commuters and business owners over the increased presence of security operatives and roadblocks in strategic areas of the nation’s capital.
In recent days, barricades have been mounted at several key locations within Abuja’s city centre, resulting in severe traffic congestion and long delays for thousands of motorists, civil servants, commercial drivers and other workers commuting to and from offices across the Federal Capital Territory.
Many commuters have complained of spending several hours navigating alternative routes as security personnel restricted access to some roads leading to government offices and other sensitive facilities.
The unusual security presence also sparked speculation among residents, with some expressing fears that the measures might have been prompted by intelligence reports of an impending security threat.
However, speaking during a joint media briefing organised by security and intelligence agencies on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, dismissed such concerns and urged members of the public not to panic.
According to him, the deployment of personnel and installation of barricades are standard security measures intended to maintain public order, particularly at a time when the Federal Capital Territory has witnessed an increase in protest activities.
He assured residents and visitors that there was no specific security situation that should cause fear or anxiety.
Iniedu explained that security agencies regularly review their operational strategies based on prevailing circumstances and intelligence assessments, adding that visible deployments serve as a deterrent against individuals who might seek to exploit public gatherings to commit crimes or disrupt peace.
He noted that the measures were also designed to ensure that lawful protests take place peacefully without degenerating into violence or threatening the safety of innocent citizens.
The police spokesperson appealed to residents to cooperate with security personnel by obeying traffic diversions, complying with lawful directives and remaining patient while the operations continue.
He added that security agencies remain committed to safeguarding lives and property while respecting the constitutional rights of citizens to engage in lawful and peaceful assembly.
According to him, maintaining security in the nation’s capital requires continuous collaboration between law enforcement agencies and members of the public.
The briefing also served to reassure diplomatic missions, businesses, government institutions and visitors that Abuja remains safe and that security agencies are working together to preserve stability across the city.
Officials at the briefing emphasised that the presence of security personnel should be viewed as a proactive effort to prevent security breaches rather than a response to any immediate danger.
They explained that the Federal Capital Territory, as the seat of government and home to critical national institutions, requires heightened security monitoring, especially during periods of
increased public activities and demonstrations.
The agencies further appealed to residents to disregard rumours circulating on social media suggesting that the barricades were linked to any extraordinary security emergency.
They urged the public to rely only on verified information from official channels and avoid spreading misinformation capable of creating unnecessary panic.
Security officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting democratic rights while ensuring that public order is maintained, noting that peaceful protests would continue to receive appropriate security coverage to prevent infiltration by criminal elements.
They also encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities, stressing that public cooperation remains an essential component of effective policing and national security.
The reassurance comes as authorities continue efforts to balance the protection of citizens’ constitutional freedoms with the need to maintain peace, security and uninterrupted socio-economic activities in Nigeria’s capital city.
