The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Abubakar Gombe, has called on residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to actively participate in the democratic process by ensuring the election of credible and accountable leaders in Saturday’s Area Council elections.

Professor Gombe made the appeal during a visit to the palace of the Sarkin Bwari, His Royal Highness Alhaji Awal Musa Ijakoro II, where he led party leaders to pay homage and seek royal blessings for the party and its candidates ahead of the polls.

Speaking on the importance of grassroots governance, Gombe emphasised that the local government, being the tier of government closest to the people, carries the primary responsibility for addressing community needs and delivering essential services.

“This level of government is the foundation of democracy at the grassroots. Residents must take ownership of the process by electing leaders who are credible, accountable, and committed to serving the people,” he said.

The SDP chairman urged voters to be vigilant, exercise their franchise wisely, and support candidates who demonstrate integrity and a genuine commitment to improving the welfare of their communities.

Party leaders who accompanied him reiterated their commitment to running a transparent and peaceful campaign, assuring residents that the SDP would field competent candidates capable of transforming the Area Councils across the FCT.
