The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared that the state currently has no pension arrears, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare and dignity of retirees.

The governor made this known in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gbenga Akosile, following a courtesy visit by the senior management team of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) at Lagos House, Marina.

The PTAD delegation was led by its Executive Secretary, Tolulope Odunaiya, who visited the governor to strengthen collaboration on pension administration and retirees’ welfare.

According to the statement, Sanwo-Olu said his administration holds pensioners in high esteem and remains committed to treating them with dignity, fairness and equity in recognition of their years of service.

“We in Lagos State understand and appreciate the lives and the time of our pensioners. We know that they have used very active parts of their lives serving the government at one point or another,” the governor said.

Highlighting reforms under the contributory pension scheme, Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos had cleared all outstanding pension liabilities and currently stands out among states in the country.

“On the contributing pension, we are the only state today that doesn’t have any pension arrears.

“In the last three years, we have cleared everything that is a liability on our pension. There is no pensioner that would say we owe three years’ money,” he stated.

The governor added that his administration would continue to strengthen pension systems and ensure timely payments, describing retirees as an important segment of society whose welfare must not be neglected.

Observers say the announcement underscores Lagos State’s efforts to maintain fiscal discipline while safeguarding the interests of former public servants who dedicated their productive years to government service.
