The fragile hope for peace between Ukraine and Russia quickly dissolved as both nations resumed intense overnight drone strikes on Monday, marking a swift return to hostilities following a short-lived Orthodox Easter truce.
The 32-hour ceasefire, observed over the Orthodox Easter period, had been seen as a rare opportunity for calm in a conflict that has stretched on with devastating consequences. However, even before the truce formally ended, both sides had traded accusations of widespread violations, casting doubt on its effectiveness and sincerity.
By early Monday, the battlefield had once again shifted into active confrontation.
According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia launched a wave of 98 drones overnight in what officials described as a renewed offensive targeting key areas. Ukrainian air defence systems responded swiftly, successfully intercepting and destroying 87 of the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles, thereby preventing potentially wider destruction.
Despite the defensive success, the attacks were not without consequence. Authorities confirmed that an infrastructure facility in the central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region was struck during the assault. Emergency services were deployed to the scene, while officials worked to assess the extent of the damage and determine whether there were casualties.
Local administrators described the situation as “under control but tense,” noting that the strike underscored the persistent vulnerability of critical infrastructure even amid improved air defence performance.
On the other side, Russia reported its own defensive operations against Ukrainian drone incursions. According to Russian officials, air defence forces intercepted and destroyed 33 Ukrainian aircraft-type drones on April 13. The statement framed the response as a successful effort to repel attempted attacks on Russian territory.
While Moscow did not immediately provide detailed information about targeted locations or damage, officials emphasized that their air defence systems remained on high alert following what they described as “continued provocations.”
The renewed strikes reflect a broader pattern in the war, where temporary ceasefires often tied to religious or humanitarian occasions have struggled to hold. Analysts say deep mistrust between the two sides, combined with ongoing military objectives, makes sustained pauses in fighting extremely difficult to achieve.
The Orthodox Easter truce had been expected to provide civilians with a brief respite, particularly in frontline regions where constant shelling and drone attacks have become a daily reality. Instead, reports of violations during the ceasefire further eroded confidence in any immediate prospects for de-escalation.
Military experts note that drone warfare has become an increasingly central element of the conflict, allowing both Ukraine and Russia to strike targets far beyond traditional frontlines. The relatively low cost and high precision of drones have made them a preferred tool for targeting infrastructure, military assets, and logistics networks.
As the conflict grinds on, the latest escalation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing diplomatic efforts. With both sides continuing to bolster their air defence capabilities while expanding drone operations, the war appears poised to remain locked in a cycle of attack and counterattack.
For civilians caught in the crossfire, the end of the Easter truce brings renewed uncertainty and a return to nights punctuated by sirens, explosions, and the constant threat from above.
