The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has challenged the senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, to lay down a strong marker in their quest to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games by delivering a decisive victory against Comoros today, Friday, October 9, 2026.

The first-leg encounter of the second-round African qualifying series is set for a 6:00 PM WAT kickoff at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State.

Though designated as Comoros’ home fixture, owing to the island nation’s lack of a Confederation of African Football (CAF)-approved stadium, both legs of the tie will be hosted at the Ikenne facility. The reverse fixture will take place at the same venue on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Ahead of the clash, NFF officials urged the team to treat the fixture with utmost urgency, stressing that early momentum is vital to navigating Africa’s rigorous five-round qualification process.

Reiterating the federation’s stance, Super Falcons interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen confirmed the squad’s readiness despite the absence of a few senior regulars.

”Withdrawals will not affect the team’s objective,” Eguavoen stated, assuring fans that the players in camp possess the quality and drive required to secure a comfortable advantage. “For us, the message is clear: start well, stay focused, and take the first firm step toward LA 2028.”

Squad morale remains high following the arrival of key players, including team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, defender Michelle Alozie, and midfielders Toni Payne and Jennifer Echegini, swelling the camp to full strength. Assistant coach Ayisat Yusuf also cautioned the 10-time African champions against complacency, highlighting Comoros’ dominant performance in the previous round.

”We cannot afford to underestimate anybody,” Yusuf warned. “Comoros come into this round on the back of confidence, and every team raises their game against Nigeria. We must respect them, but we must execute our game plan ruthlessly.”

Comoros reached the second round after an impressive 30–0 aggregate win over Sudan in the opening stage. However, the Super Falcons, fresh off their return to the Olympic stage at Paris 2024, enter Friday’s match as heavy favorites to progress to the third round scheduled for March 2027.

CAF has appointed Rwandan referee Henriette Byukusenge to officiate the encounter, assisted by compatriots Sandrine Murangwa, Regine Mukayiranga, and Aline Umutoni. Fransiska Katjaimo of Namibia will serve as the referee assessor, while Burkina Faso’s Oumou Sy acts as match commissioner.
