As the state of emergency declared in Rivers State nears its expiration tomorrow, residents, political stakeholders, and business leaders have expressed mixed feelings over the government’s next line of action.
The emergency rule, imposed three months ago following widespread unrest, political tension, and security breakdowns in parts of the state, brought heightened military presence, restricted political gatherings, and tighter regulation of economic activities.
While some citizens believe the intervention restored relative calm, others argue it has stifled civic life and done little to address underlying issues.
“We can now go about our daily activities without fear of violence. For me, the emergency rule brought peace,” said Mrs. Nkechi Wobo, a trader at Mile 1 Market. “But I also hope the government has long-term plans to keep the peace without soldiers on every street.”
Political leaders remain divided. Members of the ruling party in the state have called on the federal government to allow normal governance to resume, insisting that democracy must not be stifled.
Opposition groups, however, are urging caution. “Lifting the emergency without strong security guarantees may plunge Rivers back into chaos,” said Mr. Tamuno Briggs, a youth leader from Bonny. “The people are tired of political violence.”
Business operators have also raised concerns over the economic costs of the emergency. Hotels, transport companies, and nightlife operators reported losses due to restrictions. “Our businesses suffered. We want a return to normalcy, but also stability,” noted a hospitality association leader in Port Harcourt.
Security analysts suggest that whether or not the emergency is extended, the state government must strengthen community-based peacebuilding and political dialogue to avoid relapse.
“The emergency provided breathing space, but sustainable peace requires dialogue, reforms, and reconciliation among political actors,” said Dr. Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, a security consultant.
All eyes are now on the federal government as Rivers residents await the official announcement on whether emergency rule will be lifted, extended, or modified.
