The retired Nigerian Army General Ishola Williams has expressed strong criticism of Nigeria’s security system, describing it as ineffective and a source of national embarrassment.
His comments came during a detailed television interview in which he discussed the country’s ongoing security challenges and the performance of the military and other security agencies.
Williams stated that despite the country’s efforts to combat insurgency, banditry, and criminal activity, the Nigerian military has continued to face serious setbacks.
He emphasised that these failures have caused ridicule both within the country and internationally.
In his own words, “People laugh at us, you know; as a military, we have lost completely our reputation People laugh at Nigeria because our security system looks like a joke.”
The retired general pointed out that foreign support, including intelligence sharing and the provision of military equipment, has not produced the expected outcomes.
He questioned why attacks on military installations and operations by criminal gangs continue to succeed, despite years of training, acquisitions, and deployment of personnel.
According to Williams, these repeated failures highlight deep-rooted issues in leadership, coordination, and operational planning within Nigeria’s defence institutions.

He said that while citizens often hear claims of successful operations against insurgents and criminals, clear evidence to support these reports is rarely made public.
This lack of accountability, he explained, fuels public scepticism and undermines trust in both the military and government authorities.
The retired officer emphasised that decisive political leadership, effective intelligence use, and proper strategic planning are critical to improving Nigeria’s security situation.
He noted that both federal and state authorities must take urgent steps to restore credibility to the country’s security forces and ensure that citizens feel safe in their communities.
