The faction of the Labour Party loyal to Julius Abure has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, demanding that he resign from the party or face formal expulsion. The group accused Obi of undermining party leadership, engaging in anti-party activities, and disrespecting the structures that brought him into national prominence.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday, the group’s spokesperson claimed Obi had consistently distanced himself from party meetings and structures while cozying up to opposition elements. “Peter Obi has turned the Labour Party into a personal platform while holding secret meetings with those working to destroy the party,” they alleged. The group also questioned his recent endorsement of a third force coalition, describing it as a betrayal.

They insisted that Obi must publicly denounce the coalition he recently aligned with and fully recognize the authority of the Abure-led executive or vacate the party entirely. “We are giving him 48 hours to resign or we will take the necessary constitutional steps to expel him. No individual is bigger than the party,” they said.

Peter Obi has not officially responded to the ultimatum, but sources close to him dismissed the threats as political noise aimed at distracting from internal party failings. Tensions have been brewing within the party since the fallout from the 2023 elections, with growing signs that the divisions may deepen ahead of 2027.
