Doctors under the umbrella of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) have issued a 10-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening to embark on an indefinite strike if their demands are not met.
In a communiqué released after their emergency meeting on Monday, the doctors accused the government of failing to address lingering issues affecting the health sector, including poor welfare, inadequate facilities, and non-payment of allowances.
The association lamented that despite repeated engagements with relevant authorities, many hospitals across the country remain underfunded, while doctors continue to work under harsh conditions without adequate compensation.
NARD President, Dr. Osundara said the ultimatum was their last resort after exhausting all avenues of dialogue.
“We have been patient long enough. Our members are overstretched, underpaid, and demoralized. If the government fails to take urgent action within 10 days, we will have no choice but to withdraw our services,” he declared.
The doctors are demanding immediate payment of withheld salaries, implementation of the hazard allowance, an upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), and the provision of modern medical equipment in public hospitals.
Health experts have warned that another nationwide strike could cripple the already fragile healthcare system, leaving patients stranded across public hospitals.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has appealed for calm, assuring that negotiations are ongoing to avert the industrial action.
