The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has challenged the media to report accurately and responsibly, stressing the place of the media in informing Nigerians about government activities.
Idris gave the charge during the 6th Edition of the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing Series on Thursday in Abuja, which featured the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to driving the media industry in Nigeria via Media Information Literacy institutes, explained that the institute will go a long way in strengthening Nigeria’s media environment and support journalists to carry out their functions even more effectively.
He also said that the goal was to train some young men and women in the media industry to identify their perspectives.
“let me use this opportunity to reiterate to our friends and colleagues our commitment to driving the media industry in Nigeria.
“I have recently returned from a trip that took me together with some of the heads of agencies to the American National Association of Broadcasters conference and workshop under the theme, “the technology, the trend and the future”.
“He says, following this trip, I was also in France for the Nigerian business world hosted by different governments, business brands and enterprises of those activities.
“There I met with executives of the United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to further fine tune the imminent takeoff of the first of its kind, Media Information Literacy institutes that Nigeria will be hosting here in Abuja.
“That institute will go a long way towards strengthening Nigeria’s media environment and supporting journalists to carry out their functions even more effectively,” he said.
Speaking on power, the minister said that the present administration was making good efforts in advancing electricity access and accountability across the country.
He said that electricity was crucial in achieving the goal of industrialising Nigeria for the purpose of providing jobs, skills, enhancing exports and for the overall prosperity of the nation.
He therefore urged the media to report accurately and responsibly, emphasising the media’s role in informing Nigerians about government activities.
He also noted that the aim of the initiative was to provide first hand facts and figures to Nigerians on the policies and programmes of the government.
“Electricity is important to achieving the goal of industrialising Nigeria for the purpose of providing jobs, skills, enhancing exports and for the overall prosperity of our nation.
“I urge you to report accurately, we owe each Nigerians to present the news to them with every sense of responsibility and professionalism.
”According to him, the intention of course is to inform Nigerians about the activities and programmes of the government.
“The media will always be powerful stakeholders in building and our democratic evolution. For us as a government, we will continue to accord you the necessary respect and support for you to carry out your job.
It is on record that the Ministerial Press Briefing Series started in February, hosting ministers and representatives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies.(NAN)
