Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has made a rare and admirable decision ahead of her 65th birthday on September 21. Instead of celebrating with luxury, parties, or expensive gifts, she is asking Nigerians to contribute to the long-abandoned National Library project.
In a video message, the First Lady announced she would dedicate the day to God and education, appealing to Nigerians to turn their birthday greetings into donations. She described the National Library as a project close to her heart and one of the best gifts she could receive.
While many public figures are known for lavish spending, especially during personal celebrations, Oluremi Tinubu is taking a different path. Her decision is not only a personal sacrifice but a public reminder that national development begins with personal choices.
The National Library project has been under construction for almost two decades. Located in Abuja, the project was launched in 2006 but has suffered from poor funding, delays, and neglect. For a country with such a large population and a growing youth demographic, this is shameful. Education cannot thrive without access to knowledge, and the absence of a functional national library sends the wrong message to students, teachers, and the world.
It is refreshing to see a top government figure focus on a long-term need rather than short-term celebration. The First Lady has shown that birthdays can be more than cake and photographs but to inspire real change.
Of course, her request must be handled with transparency. Her office and the Federal Ministry of Education must ensure that the funds raised are used properly. Nigerians should also be cautious of fake accounts, as warned.
This appeal should not be viewed as a political stunt. Rather, it should push us to think differently about how we engage with national issues. If one birthday can help complete the National Library, imagine what could happen if more leaders made similar sacrifices. Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s action may seem simple, but it sends a strong message: giving back is always better than receiving.
