Alhaji Aminu Tudunwada, Vice-Chairman (VC), People With Disabilities (PWD) in Kano State, says that its members are assets and not a burden to society.
Tudunwada in Kano on Friday, explained that PWDs were responsible and determined people who could reshape the narratives in their respective communities.
He said their actions, attitude, and determination were potent tools, hence, the need for them to embrace the responsibility of being active participants in community development.
The VC, therefore, challenged PWDs to relentlessly pursue their dreams and aspirations and contribute meaningfully to the development of the society.
Tudunwada assured them of the support of the executive in implementing policies and programmes which promoted inclusion, acceptability, and opportunities for everyone.
He urged them to challenge stereotypes, breakdown barriers, advocate for their rights, and seek collaboration with others in the community to foster love, acceptance, and an understanding that diversity strengthened the society.
The VC praised the members for contributing significantly to the state’s economy through various skilled trades, including welding, construction, and furniture making,
According to him, the vocational activities lead to about 80 per cent reduction in street begging across the state.
He attributed the development to empowerment and vocational training programmes which enabled members to acquire skills and establish small businesses in their communities.
“Our members are now involved in welding, furniture making, tailoring, construction, and other trades that are boosting the economy of Kano State,”he said.
Tudunwada appealed to the state government to provide a permanent site for the PWD cluster to enhance their productivity and coordination.
“We are calling on our able governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir-Yusuf, and other economic progress advocates to help us secure a permanent place,
“We believe in ability in disability, and with the right support, we can contribute more to society,”he said.
The VC reaffirmed the group’s commitment to self-reliance and continuous economic participation through vocational engagement.
