The Police Service Commission (PSC) has deployed a high-powered monitoring team to Osun State ahead of the Aug. 15 governorship election, warning police personnel against misconduct and partisanship.
The monitoring delegation is led by former Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd.), who is a member of the PSC and Chairman of its Standing Committee on Police Matters. The team will monitor the conduct of police officers deployed across the state and ensure compliance with election policing guidelines.
The PSC said officers assigned to election duties must remain professional, impartial and apolitical throughout the electoral process. It also urged them to respect voters’ rights and ensure that eligible citizens are allowed to vote freely and peacefully.
The Commission said the police had a critical role in creating a peaceful environment for voting, protecting electoral materials and safeguarding election officials and citizens. It added that the monitoring team would pay particular attention to officers’ compliance with established standards of conduct.
The PSC warned that any police officer found compromising the credibility or integrity of the election would face disciplinary action. It said the deployment was aimed at safeguarding the Aug. 15 poll, strengthening public confidence in the electoral process and ensuring that police personnel operated within the law.
