The Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Nigeria Police Force have extended the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 police constables by two weeks following low application numbers from some states, including Lagos.
The application portal, which opened on December 15, 2025, was initially scheduled to close on January 25, 2026, but will now remain open until February 8, 2026.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the PSC’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Mr Torty Kalu.
According to the statement, the decision to extend the deadline was taken after the commission received over 400,000 applications nationwide, alongside noticeable disparities in the level of participation across states.
The recruitment exercise followed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a nationwide security emergency on November 26, 2025, during which he directed the Nigeria Police Force and the Armed Forces to urgently recruit additional personnel to confront rising insecurity across the country.
The PSC noted that while the overall response to the exercise had been encouraging, some states recorded significantly low application figures, necessitating the extension to ensure equitable representation across the federation.
The commission urged eligible Nigerians, particularly from states with low turnout, to take advantage of the extended window and apply through the official recruitment portal.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and merit-based recruitment process aimed at strengthening the manpower capacity of the Nigeria Police Force in line with the federal government’s security objectives.
The PSC added that further updates on the next stages of the recruitment process would be communicated to applicants through official channels.
