The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 13 Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, in a move aimed at strengthening leadership capacity and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
The decision followed the successful completion of a promotion exercise that included written examinations and oral interviews conducted at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to the commission, the exercise was designed to ensure that promotions to senior leadership positions within the police hierarchy are based strictly on merit, competence and proven service record.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the commission, Torty Kalu, the PSC said the list of the successful officers had been forwarded to the Nigeria Police Force for immediate implementation.
The commission explained that the promotion process forms part of its statutory responsibility to oversee appointments, promotions and disciplinary matters involving senior officers in the police force.
Among the officers elevated to the new rank are Emmanuel Ado Christopher, who currently serves as Commissioner of Police in Yobe State; Joseph Eribo, Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State; and Dantawaye Miller, Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory.
Others on the promotion list include Uche Ifeanyi Henry; Olarenwaju Peter Ogunlowo, who serves as Commissioner of Police in Ogun State; and Muhammad Dahiru, Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State.
The newly promoted officers will now join the ranks of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, one of the highest operational positions in the structure of the Nigeria Police Force.
Officials said the promotion exercise underscores ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening command structure and rewarding excellence among senior officers in the force.
The PSC noted that the screening process assessed the officers’ professional competence, leadership experience, performance records and understanding of contemporary policing challenges.
According to the commission, such rigorous evaluation ensures that only officers with the necessary capacity and integrity are entrusted with higher responsibilities within the organisation.
Following the approval, the commission transmitted the names of the promoted officers to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for immediate implementation in accordance with established procedures.
Security analysts say promotions within the upper ranks of the police force often play a key role in shaping operational leadership, as Assistant Inspectors-General are typically responsible for supervising major departments, zones or strategic operations across the country.
The development is also expected to strengthen coordination between the PSC and the police leadership as both institutions continue efforts to improve efficiency, discipline and accountability within the force.
Observers note that merit-based promotions have increasingly become a focus of police reforms in Nigeria, with authorities seeking to ensure that advancement within the service reflects competence, professionalism and dedication to duty.
