President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his condolences over the passing of Professor Emeritus Biodun Jeyifo, a former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and one of Africa’s leading literary scholars.
Professor Jeyifo passed away on Wednesday, prompting tributes from across Nigeria and the global academic community.
In a condolence message to the family, friends, and associates of the late scholar, issued by his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Thursday, President Tinubu described Jeyifo as a “towering intellectual whose contributions to African literature, postcolonial studies, and cultural theory left an enduring legacy.”
The President noted that Jeyifo would be deeply missed for his incisive criticism and masterful interpretations of the works of Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, highlighting the late scholar’s role in shaping literary discourse in Nigeria and beyond.
Jeyifo’s death marks the loss of a prominent voice in African scholarship, whose work influenced generations of academics, writers, and students across the continent.
