The Presidency has dismissed recent remarks by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar alleging that hunger and hardship have worsened under the current administration, insisting that Nigeria is firmly on the path of recovery and growth.
Atiku, in a statement over the weekend, had criticized the Federal Government, claiming that economic reforms had deepened poverty, weakened the naira, and left millions of citizens in despair. He argued that the administration had no coherent plan to tackle food inflation and unemployment.
Reacting on Monday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, described Atiku’s comments as “politically motivated and disconnected from reality.”
According to Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s economic agenda, including the removal of fuel subsidy, exchange rate unification, and support for domestic agriculture, is already yielding results, even if the impact may not be immediate.
The government acknowledges the current challenges, but it is misleading to say Nigerians are hungrier today than ever before. What the President has done is to take bold steps that previous administrations including Atiku’s own party failed to take,” Onanuga said.
He added that the administration is working tirelessly to stabilize food supply, boost local production, and attract foreign investment to create jobs. He cited recent policy measures such as the release of grains from the national reserve, funding for farmers, and interventions to ease access to fertilizers.
Onanuga also accused Atiku of exploiting the hardship narrative for political mileage ahead of the 2027 elections.
Atiku has chosen to play politics with the people’s pain, instead of offering constructive ideas. The truth is, Nigeria is on the right track, and the difficult phase we are passing through is temporary,” he stressed.
The Presidency further assured Nigerians that ongoing reforms will restore economic stability, curb inflation, and strengthen the naira, urging citizens to remain patient and supportive of the government’s efforts.
