The Presidency has countered claims by Organised Labour – the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) – that President Bola Tinubu promised that fuel prices would remain unchanged.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, took to his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @abdulfagge said: “I sat through the two meetings President @officialABAT had with Labour leaders on minimum wage. At neither of the meetings was an offer made in exchange for a fuel price hike. Ajaero is once again playing his dirty politics with the emotions of Nigerians.”
NLC President Joe Ajaero, had accused the government of betrayal, asserting that the increase contradicts agreements made during negotiations for the ₦70,000 minimum wage.
Ajaero emphasised that one of the reasons for accepting the new minimum wage was the understanding that fuel prices would not rise, despite recognising that ₦70,000 was insufficient for many Nigerians.
He expressed disappointment, stating, “We are filled with a deep sense of betrayal as the federal government clandestinely increases the pump price of PMS.”
