The Chief Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Olowoniyi, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply is set to improve gradually as maintenance work on a major gas pipeline nears completion, with full restoration expected within the next two weeks.
Olowoniyi made the remarks on Thursday during an interview on Arise TV, just days after the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, publicly apologized for the persistent power outages that have disrupted homes, businesses, schools, and industries across the country in recent weeks.
Addressing concerns over the apology, Olowoniyi clarified that it was a reflection of leadership and accountability rather than an admission of personal culpability. “I think, first of all, I’d like to start with the apology from the Honourable Minister, which we believe is all about taking leadership in the sector,” he said.
He explained that the ongoing maintenance work on the gas pipeline, which serves as a critical supply line for thermal power plants, has affected electricity generation and caused the widespread outages. Olowoniyi emphasized that the technical teams are working around the clock to ensure that the pipeline is fully operational, allowing power plants to restore normal generation levels.
According to him, Nigerians should expect gradual improvements in electricity supply over the coming days as sections of the pipeline are returned to service. Full restoration, he said, is anticipated within two weeks, after which power availability is expected to stabilize across the country.
Olowoniyi also highlighted that the power sector has been implementing measures to strengthen infrastructure and improve service delivery, stressing that the government remains committed to addressing the challenges that have contributed to recent disruptions. He called for patience and understanding from electricity consumers, assuring them that sustained efforts are being made to reduce outages and improve reliability.
The technical adviser’s comments come amid growing frustration among citizens and businesses over erratic power supply, which has intensified operational costs and affected daily life. His reassurance signals a concerted effort by the Ministry of Power to restore confidence in the sector and ensure that Nigerians can rely on consistent electricity in the near future.
