At least 18 individuals marking the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests were arrested today, Sunday October 20, by the police at the Lekki Toll Gate

The #EndSARS movement, which erupted between October 1 and 20, 2020, was a response to widespread outrage over police brutality and culminated in the tragic Lekki Toll Gate shooting on October 20, 2020, where lives were reportedly lost.

During today’s anniversary gathering, police officers tear-gassed and detained protesters, including prominent activists such as Hassan Soweto, National Spokesperson of the Youth Rights Campaign, and members of the #EndBadGovernance Movement.

Juwon Sanyaolu, National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, and Omole Ibukun, founder of the Creative Change Centre, confirmed the arrests in statements to the media.

Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress’ 2023 presidential candidate, also tweeted that the detained protesters were beaten before being taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Lagos.
