The Lagos State Police Command has announced plans to arraign a National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leader, Shamsideen Oladiti, better known as “Shamelon,” over the alleged killing of a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.
According to the police, the arraignment is scheduled for Friday. Oladiti, aged 55, is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos, where he has undergone interrogation.
On 17 September 2025, around 3:00 p.m., the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider in Tapa Street, Lagos Island, using a helmet and fists, inflicting serious injuries. The rider was rushed to hospital, placed on oxygen, and is reportedly still receiving medical treatment.
In addition, another complaint was lodged in connection with an earlier incident on 28 August 2025, in which Oladiti allegedly struck a man repeatedly with a metallic object. That victim later died, and his body was deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.
Hence, the suspect is facing dual charges of murder and assault causing harm.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has called for firm action. The Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, described the incident as “an act that must be condemned by every well-meaning Nigerian,” stressing that “the sanctity of human life has no alternative.”
Residents and sympathizers of the deceased protested at Shamelon’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, setting two of his motorcycles ablaze in an expression of public outrage.
Investigations at SCID are ongoing, and further evidence (forensic, medical, witness statements) will be crucial.
On arraignment day, the court will read charges and possibly admit or deny bail depending on the strength of the police’s case.
If convicted, Oladiti could face serious penalties, including imprisonment.
