The Kano State Police Command says it has arrested 333 suspects over violence and electoral offences during Saturday’s re-run and by-elections in Ghari/Tsanyawa and Bagwai/Shanono constituencies. Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists in Kano, noting that the arrests followed attempts by thugs imported from within and outside the state to disrupt the polls.
He said items recovered from the suspects included a pump action rifle, five locally made guns, 94 sticks, 16 swords, 18 cutlasses, 32 locally made weapons, 18 knives, 23 arrows, seven catapults, 14 vehicles, two ballot boxes, 163 thumb-printed ballot papers, and over ₦4 million in cash. The suspects, according to him, have been arraigned before Magistrate Courts across the state for charges ranging from conspiracy and possession of offensive weapons to snatching election materials and soliciting votes.
Bakori commended security agencies under the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security for their professionalism in containing the situation and urged residents to remain law-abiding. He stressed that the command remains committed to safeguarding democracy and called on citizens to see security as a collective responsibility.
