Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have intercepted a truck loaded with 8,000 military camouflage uniforms, 80 cartons of suspected illicit drugs and a large consignment of footwear allegedly destined for the South-East region of the country.
The operation, which police described as intelligence-driven, was carried out by officers attached to the Command’s
Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Epe during the early hours of Saturday, leading to the arrest of four suspects believed to be connected with the shipment.
The suspects were identified as a logistics manager, Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi, 45; truck driver, Ezugu Chukwuma, 38; motor-boy, Chinedu David, 29; and delivery agent, Ndidiamaka Emeka, 43.
According to police authorities, the suspects were apprehended while transporting the items in an unregistered MAN diesel truck allegedly heading to Aba in Abia State.
The interception has raised fresh concerns among security agencies over the illegal circulation of military apparel and the activities of criminal networks involved in transporting prohibited items across the country.
Sources within the police command disclosed that the operation followed actionable intelligence regarding suspicious movements of a truck believed to be conveying prohibited materials.
Acting on the intelligence, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit reportedly mounted surveillance along strategic routes in Epe and tracked the vehicle before eventually stopping and searching it.
During the search, officers discovered dozens of bags carefully packed inside the truck. Further inspection revealed that the vehicle was carrying military camouflage uniforms concealed among other goods.
Police said a total of 47 bags were recovered from the truck, with each bag containing approximately 150 pieces of military camouflage uniforms.
The discovery brought the total number of recovered uniforms to about 8,000 pieces.
Investigators also found 80 cartons containing substances suspected to be illicit drugs as well as a large quantity of shoes believed to be part of the consignment.
The sheer volume of the recovered military uniforms immediately triggered security concerns, prompting investigators to widen their probe into the origin and intended destination of the items.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that the proliferation of military uniforms in civilian hands poses a significant threat to national security.
Over the years, criminal gangs, kidnappers, armed robbers and other non-state actors have been known to disguise themselves in military attire to evade detection, gain access to restricted locations or deceive members of the public.

Police also revealed that a fifth suspect identified simply as Anthony remains at large.
According to preliminary investigations, Anthony allegedly arranged the shipment and coordinated its movement from the point of loading to its intended destination.
Authorities believe he may possess critical information regarding the ownership of the uniforms, the suspected drugs and the wider network involved in the operation.
Security operatives have since launched a manhunt to locate and apprehend him.
