The National Police Council has approved the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the endorsement was unanimous, signaling broad consensus among members of the council.
The meeting of the council was held at the State House, Abuja, in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Police Council to consider and approve the appointment of an Inspector-General of Police.
Monday’s session commenced at about 2:15 p.m. when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who chairs the council, arrived at the Council Chamber.
The Police Council comprises the President as chairman, the 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police.
The confirmation of Disu’s appointment formally positions him as the head of the Nigeria Police Force, with the responsibility of steering the nation’s policing strategy and internal security operations.
His appointment comes at a time when the country continues to grapple with diverse security challenges, with expectations that the new police chief will strengthen ongoing reforms and enhance coordination between federal and state authorities in tackling crime.
