The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of suspects linked to the killing of a woman and her children in Dorayi Chiranchi, Kano State, following an intelligence-led operation.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the suspects were apprehended after a distress call alerted security agencies to the attack on January 17.

He disclosed that the syndicate leader, identified as Umar Auwalu, allegedly confessed to the crime and to involvement in other killings in parts of Kano.

“The Kano State Police Command has arrested three principal suspects over the murder of a housewife and her children in Dorayi Chiranchi,” the Command said in a statement. “The suspects were nabbed in an intelligence-led sting operation, with key exhibits recovered. Investigations are ongoing, and justice will be served.”

The police added that detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have been directed to expand investigations to establish the full extent of the suspects’ alleged activities.

The Command also extended condolences to the affected family and community, assuring residents of its commitment to public safety.

News of the arrests has sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians expressing grief, anger, and calls for swift justice. Commenting on the development, a social media user, Abdulrazak Mukhtar, described the incident as “heartbreaking and deeply disturbing.”

“The loss of a mother and her innocent children is a tragedy beyond words,” he said. “It’s a small relief that the suspects have been arrested, but it also reminds us how serious the issue of insecurity is. We pray justice is served fully.”

Others questioned the motive behind the crime and urged authorities to ensure accountability. “Are the murderers on a killing mission or what exactly did the victims do to warrant such unprovoked violence?” asked Raeesa, another commentator, adding that “justice delayed is justice denied.”

While many praised the police for the arrests, some urged transparency in the investigation process. “Credit to the police for making the arrests, but justice must be thorough and transparent,” said RexNova. “Crimes like this must be met with the full weight of the law to deter others and restore public trust.”

However, scepticism was also voiced about confessions and the criminal justice process. “Have you ever observed that ‘suspects always confess to crimes’ according to the police?” asked I am Oredola. “Are real criminals being caught, or are innocent citizens being replaced because people don’t question police operations?”

The Kano State Police Command reiterated that investigations are ongoing and called on the public to remain calm and allow due process. “We assure members of the public that all those responsible will be identified and brought to justice,” the Command said.
