The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the driver of the Lexus SUV carrying world boxing champion Anthony Joshua and two of his close associates, following a crash on Monday morning along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near Danco.
The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated in a Thursday briefing that the driver is in custody and that investigations into the accident are ongoing. “The driver of the Lexus SUV in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing,” the statement read.
The crash, which occurred around 11:00 a.m., tragically claimed the lives of two of the vehicle’s occupants. The SUV, registered KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck, authorities said.
The deceased have been identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, 36, a Nigerian-British national, and Gami Sina, 36, a British citizen.
Following the incident, both Lagos and Ogun State governments announced on Wednesday that Joshua had been discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after doctors declared him clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
In a joint statement signed by Mr Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr Gbenga Omotosho, the governments described the accident as “painful and deeply unfortunate” and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. They prayed for the repose of the departed and strength for their loved ones.
The statement further revealed that Anthony Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home on Wednesday to pay their final respects, ahead of the repatriation of the two friends later that evening.
Governors Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos expressed gratitude to members of the public for their concern, prayers, and support during the crisis. They also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his fatherly encouragement throughout the ordeal.
The governments commended the medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital for their professionalism and dedication in attending to Joshua and other injured victims of the crash.
