The ongoing feud between former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Omoyele Sowore has intensified, with both parties exchanging sharp words on social media platform X.
The latest chapter in their rivalry began when Peter Obi attended the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. During the event, Obi briefly greeted President Bola Tinubu. This interaction sparked rumors, particularly from Sowore, suggesting that Obi’s trip was politically motivated and linked to a ₦225 billion debt involving Fidelity Bank.
Peter Obi addressed these allegations in a post on his verified X handle, stating: “Even my solemn spiritual trip to Rome has been twisted into yet another blackmail campaign by merchants paid ostensibly to propagate anything negative against Obi.” He further clarified: “Let me categorically state that I have never sought an audience with, nor met, President Tinubu since he assumed office, except about a 1-minute meeting at the arena of Saint Peter’s Basilica Rome during the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV, where I was seated behind, and had to respectfully greet him, and other dignitaries present.” Obi also dismissed claims about his ownership of Fidelity Bank, emphasizing that while he once served as Chairman/Director, he does not own the bank. He referred to Sowore as the “self-proclaimed ‘blackmailer-in-chief’” and accused him of spreading falsehoods.
In response, Omoyele Sowore took to his X handle and posted: “I heard the “Money Launderer-In-Chief” at Pandora Papers and packaged fraud has fabricated another story this morning about the reason his elder brothers bounced him during his ill-fated visit to Rome. May Nigeria overcome the Gbajues! #RevolutionNow”. Just recently he released screenshots from his Instagram handle that reads “The illegal General of Police is after me! Prosperity Pastors are after me! Non-academic students at “NANS” are on my case! Mr. Peter Obi and his mob are afer me! Tinubu is after my life! Arewa Twitter mob after me!”
The exchange has garnered significant attention on social media, with supporters of both figures weighing in.
