Peter Obi has issued a formal legal demand for retraction and apology to activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju over allegedly defamatory social media posts spanning several years. Through his legal representatives, J.K. Ejesieme (SAN) & Co (Madiba Chambers), the former Anambra governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate accused Adeyanju of publishing “false, malicious, and grossly defamatory statements” designed to damage his reputation.
The legal notice, dated August 26, 2025, specifically targets statements made by Adeyanju on his X (formerly Twitter) handle “@adeyanjudeji,” including recent publications on August 21, 2025. The lawyers cited a particular post where Adeyanju allegedly wrote: “Peter Obi can only be president of the obidients on social media. You see that my one vote, I will rather give it to Tinubu than the leader of the mob.” The letter describes this as part of a pattern of defamatory content dating back to 2022.
The demand letter outlines five specific allegations Adeyanju has made against Obi, including claims that he is “a religious bigot for using religion to campaign,” that he is “a fraud” who doesn’t pay influencers, and describing him as “a product of bad upbringing” and “a scum who will remain one.” The legal team also referenced earlier posts from 2023 where Adeyanju allegedly called Obi “the religious bigot” and claimed he had been “exposed” for campaigning in churches for seven months.
Obi’s lawyers are demanding immediate retraction of all defamatory statements, a public apology, and appear to be preparing for potential legal action if their demands are not met. The case highlights growing tensions between prominent political figures and critics on social media platforms, where inflammatory rhetoric has become increasingly common in Nigerian political discourse.
