Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, has donated ₦15 million to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka’s Faculty of Dentistry to support its accreditation efforts. The contribution, handed over directly to students during an impromptu visit on Friday, addresses urgent needs highlighted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, which warned that the department risked losing its license by July 2025 without necessary upgrades.
Obi, a proud alumnus of UNN, praised the students’ resilience and noted that their educational struggle mirrors that of many Nigerians striving for excellence in under-resourced institutions. “You are the ones that need the facilities in the university, not the lecturers,” he told students, promising to rally additional support from well-spirited individuals and stakeholders to help the department meet global standards.
The funds are planned to go towards upgrading critical clinical equipment and expanding laboratory capacity, which may enable the faculty to increase its output beyond just 15 dental surgeons per year.
