The Labour Party 2023 Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi has clarified the context behind recent viral images showing him serving food at a charity event in Imo State, stating that the act was not staged or politically motivated, but a genuine gesture of service rooted in his values. In a detailed post on X, Obi explained that he was attending the Jubilee of Hope, a private service initiative aimed at encouraging societal leaders to demonstrate empathy by directly serving the less privileged.
Obi noted that while he neither publicized the event nor invited media coverage, third parties shared the photos online, leading to public speculation and political misinterpretation. “Let me be clear, that event was not about me. It was called the Jubilee of Hope, and its purpose is straightforward—to remind us all that true leadership is service,” he wrote. He added that the event also featured the participation of other prominent Nigerians such as Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Senator Osita Izunaso, and former Seplat Chairman Dr. A.B.C. Orjiako.
Responding to critics who questioned the sincerity of the act, Obi said serving others is a normal part of his daily life, both in public office and private life. “I live simply. I sweep, I clean, because for me, humility is not a campaign strategy; it is a way of life,” he added. He urged Nigerians to embrace a culture of service and solidarity, stressing that building a better nation requires lifting the poor and forgotten.
