Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has confirmed that the opposition coalition has formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi confirmed that former Senate President David Mark will serve as National Chairman, while former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, takes up the role of National Secretary.
Obi described the coalition’s decision as a result of “deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward.” He stressed that no single group can change Nigeria alone, underscoring the need for broad-based collaboration. “To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls, even when those bridges are uneasy,” he said.
The post emphasized the coalition’s resolve to work together and sacrifice for the greater good, with a view to presenting “competent, capable, and compassionate leadership” that will prioritize the welfare of Nigerians. The move is seen as a strategic step to unify opposition forces under one banner ahead of what many anticipate will be a high-stakes presidential election in 2027.
