Peter Obi, along with leadership from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), survived a targeted attack in Benin City, Edo State, earlier today, Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

The incident occurred during a visit for the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the ADC. According to statements from the movement’s interim national coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, and early news reports:

Armed individuals reportedly followed the convoy from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

Assailants opened fire at the gate of the residence, resulting in several vehicles being destroyed.

While Peter Obi and other top officials reportedly escaped unharmed, there are reports of individuals at the scene sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.

This incident follows a period of heightened tension between Obi and the Edo State government. In mid-2025, Governor Monday Okpebholo had publicly warned Obi not to enter the state without prior security clearance, a move that critics at the time described as a threat to his safety.

As of now, the scene is reportedly being monitored by police, though no official statement has been released by security agencies regarding arrests or the specific identity of the attackers.
