PERSPECTIVE – Leeches, migrational birds and power politics in Delta State

Most Delta politicians are leeches. They attach themselves to hosts, usually the Delta State governor, local government chairmen or legislature and begin to suck lifeblood out of their offices.

They eschew risks and uncertainties, the reason they follow the governor to wherever and whichever political party he goes. Leeches don’t take risks. They go wherever the host takes them, attach their proboscis and remain there, not moving but sucking blood and growing fat.

That is who many Delta politicians are, unthinking and shameless blood suckers who get so voluble when defending their mindless bloodsucking proclivity. They don’t think, they are vermin and believe it is pointless to make effort, to be different.

All their senses are focused on “where belle face”. They have no initiatives of their own, they don’t need it. All they have is the skill to attach themselves to the next governor as host and leech him all they want. Their skill is to attach their proboscis to the host. The challenges of life are taken care of by their host, the governor, using state funds.

This is why anytime you challenge the governor or ask questions on the propriety of his actions, the politicians let fly all the curses and abuse in their arsenal at you. Your action threatens their food source, their livelihood, their very survival.

They are vacuous and have no thought or initiative of their own. The governor is their food source and their survival. If the host dies or shoved out of office, the leech also dies.

So when governor Sheriff defects mindlessly from PDP to APC without the courtesy of informing his party men and women, he knew that the entire PDP establishment in the state had no choice but to follow him.

They have no beliefs or mind of their own and their politics are not guided by any principles. They have to follow the host who provides for them. There cannot be any fancy talk of principles when hunger looms.

The choice before them was stark. They had to follow him to the new party or die. He is their host and they are the leeches attached to his politics and office.

Many Delta politicians cannot be better than leeches. This is why the opposition has never been able to defeat the ruling party in Delta state. You hear them always mouth their reasons for capitulation. And as you know, failure is always the father of excuses. “I cannot be an opposition politician”. “I cannot come from a minority ethnic group and still be an opposition politician”.

That is double jeopardy, true, but Its all loudmouthed excuses for lack of spine, for initiative or action. They have no principles in politics and no beliefs to fight for, so they join the horde of leeches to suck on and align with whoever is governor, even if he has no capacity to lead.

There are no “who’s who” in Delta politics. If there were, they would not all be flying about like emigrational birds from PDP to APC. Politicians of substance are known for their steadfastness in belief, principles and ideological leanings in their entire career.

A great politician is not remarkable for his big agbada but for his espoused beliefs and advocacies. Delta politicians are running with the governor to wherever his fancy takes him because they are dependents looking for where to make a living. They accept whoever is made governor and follow him to wherever he chooses to take them.

In warfare, when a general defects to the camp of the enemy, the only prescribed punishment by any army if caught is execution. But in Delta state he is rewarded with leadership of the enemy camp. The general who runs from battle will always run again.

The state is so loathe to admit that PDP was run down by Sheriff and Okowa through their human in capacities, which is the reason for their defection to APC. As they lead their leeching horde to a better managed and focused political party, APC Delta, there’s no examination of conscience on how they failed so shamefully, how the teeming elite of PDP became political refugees in their own state even as they occupied the highest offices as a ruling party. If they couldn’t make progress and be satisfied as a ruling party, how can they now be satisfied with being immigrants in the APC? Does anyone think that Bola Tinubu being president, has the capacity to change the voting calculus of Delta state?

Ok APC are going to end up causing conflict and threatening disruptions in the entire political space of the state and then cede the state to a non-state politician who will come in to inherit the spoils, just as a non-state politician defeated the incumbent governor and the entire political establishment in 2023 and won the state in the presidential election by a wide margin, even when a sitting governor was a candidate in the election.

Sheriff and Ifeanyi will again run the APC down, the house they just ran to when drenched by their own dung. After they have settled in and seized control of Delta APC , they will perform the usual ablutions before chasing the hosts away, along with many who defected with them.

All these will happen before the next election. Just as it happened early this year when every party member was running away from PDP.

They’ll still run like that from APC until the general himself abandons camp again and run to the camp of a new enemy. When you start running, you keep running and never stop. Those who run away never build any camp.

Our sympathy goes only to the leeches, the political vermin of Delta. Where will they get new blood to suck?

LAST LINE:
It is our shame to see the so-called political leaders of Delta state finding common ground with the dregs of Yoruba politics like MC Oluomo, making a show of it and deceiving themselves that by so doing and publicizing the shame, they are hobnobbing with the elite of Yoruba power politics.

I could never imagine to see such demeaning development in my lifetime. I recall Senator Dafinone refusing to shake hands with Lamidi Adedibu, a member of his own NPN in Ibadan in 1982 for his disruption of NPN Ibadan politics. I remember Alfred Rewane defying the UPN National Headquarters and providing start-up funding for Bendel State governorship campaign for Ambrose Alli in 1979.

Ambrose Alli had no money for campaign and offered to sell his only car. Delta state, how low have you fallen?
