In a major boost to Nigeria’s capital formation and national development, the National Pension Commission (PenCom) has announced a $250 million commitment from the country’s pension industry dedicated to long-term infrastructure investment over the next decade.

The Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, made the disclosure on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, during the commission’s annual media conference held in Lagos under the theme “From Reform to Reality: Renewed Hope, Pension Security for Nigerians.”

Speaking to stakeholders and media executives, Oloworaran explained that the financial commitment comprises a $200 million anchor investment provided directly by Pension Fund Operators (PFOs) through structured capital calls over the next ten years, alongside an additional $50 million being mobilized from international Development Finance Institutions (DFIs).

“Nigeria needs productive investment, and contributors need secure returns,” Oloworaran stated. “We will serve both through rigorous project selection and uncompromising protection of contributors’ interests.” She emphasized that the initial capital pool represents a baseline rather than a ceiling, noting that the pledge will expand as viable, risk-adjusted infrastructure projects emerge. Specific project allocations are slated for rollout between the first and second quarters of 2027.

The announcement comes amidst rapid expansion across the pension ecosystem. Oloworaran revealed that total pension assets under management surged from N20.79 trillion in July 2024 to N31.48 trillion in July 2026, delivering over N10.7 trillion in new retirement wealth within two years.

Over the same period, 938,229 new contributors entered the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), while monthly disbursements to more than 241,000 retirees rose from N12.15 billion to N14.83 billion.

Addressing inclusion strategies at the conference, Babatunde Alayande, Head of PenCom’s Micro Pension Department, outlined steps to onboard Nigeria’s estimated 85 million informal sector workers.

Alayande explained that registration documentation has been streamlined to require only a National Identification Number (NIN) and phone number, supported by newly introduced Shariah-compliant and gender-sensitive pension products designed to deepen financial access.
