Barely 12 hours after Governor Ademola Adeleke announced his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the party’s Osun State Chairman, Sunday Bisi, declared that the scheduled governorship primary would not hold, the PDP has now resolved to conduct the primary election on Tuesday, December 2. The sudden turnaround comes after a day of confusion triggered by internal turmoil within the party.
On Monday, Bisi told a select group of journalists that the suspension and counter-suspension of key national officers—individuals who play statutory roles in supervising congresses, conducting primaries, and forwarding candidates’ names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)—had thrown the entire process into uncertainty. According to him, the leadership crisis at the national level created procedural and legal gaps that made it nearly impossible to proceed with the primary as originally planned.
However, in a swift development late Monday night, the party’s national leadership communicated that the issues had been resolved sufficiently to allow the primary to proceed. Party officials in Osun have since begun mobilising delegates and stakeholders to ensure a smooth conduct of the exercise on Tuesday.
The rapid shift has heightened political tension in the state, particularly following Governor Adeleke’s dramatic exit from the PDP, which analysts say has further complicated the political landscape and raised questions about the party’s internal cohesion.
Despite the turbulence, the PDP insists it remains committed to conducting a transparent and credible primary that will produce a viable candidate ahead of the upcoming governorship election.
