The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained the reasons behind the dissolution of its Akwa Ibom State Executive Committee, saying the decision was necessary to restore internal harmony and reposition the party ahead of future elections.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, made this known in Abuja on Friday while briefing journalists on the development.

According to him, the National Working Committee (NWC) took the action after reviewing petitions and reports of factional disputes, irregularities in leadership processes, and allegations of misconduct that threatened the unity of the party in the state.

>The dissolution became imperative in order to protect the integrity of our party. We received overwhelming complaints from stakeholders in Akwa Ibom, and after due consultations and consideration of the facts, the NWC approved the dissolution of the state executives with immediate effect,” Ologunagba said.

He added that a caretaker committee has been constituted to manage the affairs of the party in the interim, pending the conduct of fresh congresses to elect new leaders.

Ologunagba assured members in Akwa Ibom that the decision was not targeted at any individual or group but was aimed at strengthening cohesion, inclusiveness, and fairness.

The party spokesman also urged members to close ranks and work collectively, warning against divisive tendencies that could undermine the PDP’s chances in upcoming elections.

Reactions have, however, trailed the move, with some party leaders in Akwa Ibom welcoming it as a step toward genuine reconciliation, while others described it as an imposition from the national secretariat.

Political analysts believe the development could significantly influence the dynamics of the PDP in Akwa Ibom as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
