The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its readiness to host a major convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, as part of its preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party leaders made the announcement on Tuesday after a high-level meeting of its National Working Committee (NWC), noting that the Ibadan convention would serve as a rallying point for members across the country to reaffirm unity and strategize for electoral victory.
According to the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, the choice of Ibadan was deliberate, given its historical significance in Nigeria’s political landscape and its central role in mobilizing grassroots support in the South-West.
“We are fully prepared for the Ibadan convention. All logistics, security arrangements, and mobilization efforts are in top gear. This convention will demonstrate that the PDP remains united, resilient, and ready to rescue Nigeria come 2027,” the party said in a statement.
The convention, expected to attract thousands of delegates, governors, lawmakers, and stakeholders, will feature deliberations on internal party reforms, zoning arrangements, and strategies for confronting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polls.
Party insiders disclosed that discussions around the selection of the PDP’s presidential candidate may also dominate the gathering, although leaders insist that the primary focus is on strengthening internal cohesion.
Meanwhile, PDP supporters in Oyo State have welcomed the development, describing it as a boost to the state’s profile and a sign of the party’s recognition of the South-West zone in national politics.
With 2027 approaching, analysts say the Ibadan convention will be a critical test of the PDP’s ability to reconcile its factions, consolidate its base, and present a formidable alternative in the next election cycle.
