The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned recent suggestions by certain commentators and political actors that some Nigerian political parties should be tagged as terrorist organizations, describing the claim as reckless, unfounded, and dangerous to the nation’s democracy.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP said such assertions were “a direct assault on the multi-party system enshrined in the 1999 Constitution” and capable of inflaming political tensions across the country.

“The unfounded attempt to brand political parties, which are legitimate democratic institutions, as terrorist entities is not only unjustifiable but also a deliberate effort to undermine the foundation of our democracy,” the statement read.

Ologunagba stressed that while the PDP supports lawful measures to combat insecurity and violent extremism, such measures must be based on credible intelligence and within the bounds of the law. He warned that politicizing security matters could erode public trust and weaken the fight against real threats.

The party accused those behind the proposal of trying to suppress opposition voices ahead of future elections, urging Nigerians to reject what it described as a “dangerous narrative that can only lead to further polarization.”

The PDP called on security agencies, civil society organizations, and the international community to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic institutions and resist attempts to weaponize security classifications for political gain.

It reiterated its commitment to peaceful politics, national unity, and the constitutional right of citizens to freely associate and participate in governance without fear of intimidation or unlawful labeling.
