Segun Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and spokesperson, has launched a fierce verbal attack against Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), describing him as a “Northern kid”.
The fiery remarks followed Baba-Ahmed’s recent public criticism assessing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as a “failure”.
Sowunmi made the statements on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, during an appearance on Vanguard’s live public affairs television broadcast, Politics Hub, aired in Abuja.
Directly addressing the PRP chairman’s criticism of the President, Sowunmi argued that Baba-Ahmed’s assessment demonstrated a lack of political maturity and failed to reflect the true responsibilities of Northern leadership regarding the region’s socio-economic challenges.
“That’s a Northern kid. What did I say? He’s a Northern kid. When you behave like a kid, you are a kid,” Sowunmi declared during the broadcast.
Reflecting on his upbringing and early education in Kaduna, Sowunmi challenged Northern political elites to look inward rather than assigning sole blame to the current federal administration. He questioned the tangible outcomes of federal allocations sent to Northern states over past decades.
“All the resources that have been allocated to the North, where is the result?” Sowunmi questioned.
He invoked the legacies of respected past Nigerian leaders from the region, such as Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Sir Ahmadu Bello, asking whether they would be satisfied with the current state of affairs in the region under its present crop of political actors.
The political exchange highlights escalating friction between opposition political leaders and key political commentators as political actors align and position themselves ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
Neither Hakeem Baba-Ahmed nor representatives from the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) have formally issued a response to Sowunmi’s comments as of the time of reporting.
