The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has dissociated itself from a planned protest against alleged police brutality slated to hold in Imo State this week, warning against attempts to drag the committee into what it described as a politically motivated agenda.
In a statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer of the PCRC, Comrade Peter Okoye, the group clarified that it was neither consulted nor involved in the organization of the planned demonstration, adding that the committee remains committed to promoting peaceful dialogue and mutual trust between the police and the public.
“The attention of the Police Community Relations Committee has been drawn to reports of a planned protest in Imo State under the guise of opposing police brutality. While PCRC remains committed to ensuring police accountability and responsible policing, we categorically state that we are not part of the said protest,” the statement read.
Okoye emphasized that while the committee acknowledges citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly, it also encourages engagements through appropriate channels and institutions established for such purposes. He cautioned against any actions that could lead to public unrest or undermine ongoing efforts to improve police-community relations in the state.
“The PCRC will not be used as a platform to further personal, political, or subversive interests under the pretense of human rights activism. We urge the organizers to rethink their approach and embrace constructive dialogue,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command has also urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring the public that allegations of police misconduct are being taken seriously and would be thoroughly investigated.
The PCRC reiterated its commitment to acting as a bridge between the police and communities across Nigeria and reaffirmed its role as a non-political, non-partisan body working solely to enhance public safety and trust.
