Some participants at the ongoing 4th Prime Atlantic Squash Championship on Tuesday praised the organisers, describing the competition as excellent and professionally managed.
The event, now in its second day, features no fewer than 64 male and female players competing at the U-19 and senior levels.
Players said the championship allowed them to showcase their talents and gain valuable experience.
They also commended the officiating and medical support, describing both as excellent and vital to the competition’s overall success.
Omotayo Opeyemi, after winning his second straight match, expressed delight at the result and said he felt no pressure during the game.
He added that he looked forward to his next match and remained determined to go far in the tournament.
“It’s a very important competition that continues to contribute to the growth of young players.
“I’m happy to be part of it and hope to reach the knockout stage,” he said.
Yusuf Babalola, who lost to Opeyemi, admitted that his opponent’s experience was evident and hard to match during their encounter.
“I played well to my satisfaction, but my opponent was simply better. I’m not disappointed. I’ll return to training,” Babalola said.
Daniel Enaifoghe, after another solid performance, said the tournament was vital for his growth and was pleased with his second consecutive victory.
“I look forward to tougher matches. Every player wants to win, and I must stay at my best,” Enaifoghe stated.
Timilehin Oladapo, who lost his match, said his opponent was better on the day and vowed to train harder for future events.
“It wasn’t the result I hoped for, but I’ll keep working. It’s not over.
“Squash is a game I truly love, and I see myself going far in the future,” Oladapo said.
Reports says that some players were matched against senior opponents to encourage younger players to raise their standard.
Organisers explained that the approach helps identify talented young players capable of replacing ageing stars in the sport.
In day two matches at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, Omotayo Opeyemi defeated Yusuf Babalola, 11-3, 11-0, 11-5 (3-0).
Daniel Enaifoghe edged past Timilehin Oladapo in a tense match, 11-3, 11-4, 3-11, 9-11, 11-9 (3-2).
Destiny Joseph overcame Benjamin Monday, winning 11-3, 11-1, 11-6 (3-0) to advance to the next stage of the tournament.
Usman Baleru beat Taofeek Ojoye convincingly with scores of 11-9, 11-2 and 11-3 (3-0).
Giwa Shuaibu dispatched Rindaps Nanome 11-3, 11-9, 11-7 (3-0) in a one-sided encounter.
Morinlola Abdumalik battled past Emmanuel Itabo 11-8, 11-5, 4-11, 2-11, 11-2 (3-2) in a five-set thriller.
The championship, which began on 9 June, will conclude on 14 June when the winners will be crowned.
