The political atmosphere in Ibadan is certainly charged on May 14. Governor Seyi Makinde is at the center of a massive political shift dubbed the “Unity Mega Rally Ibadan 2026” at Mapo Hall.

While the Governor has kept his cards close to his chest for months, today is widely expected to be the formal signal of his 2027 presidential bid. Political insiders and several reports indicate that this rally serves as the launchpad for his national campaign, fueled by pressure from various support groups and a desire to position himself as a cross-regional alternative.

Key allies, including Oyo State Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, have recently referred to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) as “our new party.”

This move appears to be a workaround for the lingering internal crises within the national PDP. A faction of the PDP, reportedly led by Taminu Turaki, is expected to formalize this coalition with the APM today.

Beyond the presidency, the alliance is set to unveil candidates for 2027, including Bimbo Adekanmbi as the consensus governorship candidate for the APM in Oyo State.

The timing is calculated by moving now, Makinde and his team are building a “fresh political house” early to avoid being trapped in PDP legal battles and Consolidating the South by Positioning Makinde as a formidable regional leader ahead of the next election cycle.
