The Oyo State Government has given residents, property owners and business operators a one-month deadline to comply with new waste management requirements, ahead of the commencement of statewide enforcement of mandatory waste bin provision from September 1, 2026.
The directive, which applies to all residential and commercial properties, forms part of the state’s renewed drive to improve environmental sanitation, strengthen waste management systems and promote cleaner communities.
Speaking with journalists in his office, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, said every household, residential building, shopping complex, plaza and business premises must provide appropriate waste bins based on the size of the property, the number of occupants and the volume of waste generated.
He explained that compliance extends beyond owning a waste bin, as residents and business operators are also required to engage only government-accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste collection and disposal.
According to the commissioner, anyone found using unapproved waste contractors or disposing of refuse through unauthorised channels will be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
To support compliance, Aderinto urged residents experiencing challenges with waste collection services or those uncertain about accredited PSP operators to contact the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) or the Department of Environmental Health Services under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for guidance.
He further disclosed that enforcement teams will inspect properties to verify not only the availability of waste bins but also evidence of payment for waste evacuation services, noting that residents and businesses are expected to remain up to date with their monthly waste disposal fees.
The commissioner added that the exercise complements the state’s ongoing daily environmental sanitation initiative, stressing that maintaining a clean environment goes beyond providing waste bins and engaging licensed waste collectors.
He emphasised that the ultimate objective is to ensure cleaner neighbourhoods, proper waste disposal practices and improved environmental health across Oyo State as the government intensifies efforts to build a cleaner and more sustainable environment for all residents.
